Anchoring in the Superyacht Era: A Conversation from the Palma Boat Show

Ben and Damien talk “dragging anchors”

At last year’s Palma Boat Show, Ben Taylor had the pleasure of speaking with superyacht Captain Damien Carr to discuss a topic that remains surprisingly unchanged: anchoring.

Despite the rapid advancements in marine technology, anchoring still relies heavily on experience, intuition, and expertise.

The Reality of Superyacht Anchoring

As Damien explained, the process of anchoring hasn’t evolved much over the years. Captains follow general recommendations, set anchor alarms, and monitor the weather. But beyond that, they’re left guessing. “There’s nothing giving us real feedback from the anchor end,” Damien pointed out. “You set the anchor, hope it holds, and react if it doesn’t.”

For superyacht captains, this means relying on visual checks, crew vigilance, and the occasional abrupt wake-up call when an alarm signals a potential dragging event. The existing systems only monitor the vessel’s movement, not what’s actually happening at the anchor itself.

Introducing a Smarter Approach to Anchoring

This is exactly why we created AnchorGuardian. Our technology bridges the gap, providing real-time data on anchor performance so captains can act before issues arise, rather than after. Since last year’s conversation with Damien, we’ve made significant progress. Our latest sea trials  have successfully tested our solution—offering a level of control and insight that was previously unavailable.

With AnchorGuardian, captains now receive real-time feedback on forces acting on the anchor, the angle of the chain, and whether conditions are safe. This means no more guesswork, no more middle-of-the-night surprises, and no more relying solely on traditional methods that have remained unchanged for decades.

Looking Ahead to Palma Boat Show 2025

As we prepare for this year’s Palma Boat Show, we’re excited to continue the conversation about the future of anchoring. If you’re attending, let’s connect and discuss how technology is transforming one of the most fundamental aspects of yachting.  You can find us at the Innovation Lounge (Superyacht Square) soon after the Palma Superyacht Village Entrance.

In the meantime, check out our latest videos on YouTube to see our technology in action. #PalmaBoatShow #Superyachts #Innovation #AnchorGuardian #SafeAnchoring #AnchorDragging
