AnchorGuardian was not developed solely in a laboratory environment. Real-world observation and sea trials formed a fundamental part of the development process.

Testing across different vessels, anchoring conditions, seabed types, and environmental situations helped validate both the technology and the information presented to users.

Each trial provided an opportunity to compare measured anchor behaviour with operational experience, refining the system over time.

Captain Damien Carr (2025)

During the customer sea trials, Captain Damien Carr highlighted several key performance milestones:

  • Visual Correlation: Trials involved a diver in the water to film anchoring scenarios, confirming that the physical behavior of the anchor on the seabed perfectly matched the data displayed on the user interface.
  • Real-Time Risk Detection: In one specific test with 15-20 knot winds, the boat appeared to be holding steady on the standard plotter, but AnchorGuardian correctly identified that the anchor was "on the edge" and at risk of dragging.
  • Actionable Feedback: The system analyzed the force going through the module and the angle of the anchor arm to provide warnings that were not visible through traditional monitoring methods.
  • Predictive Advantage: Captain Carr noted that the system's ability to suggest potential dragging before it happened—allowing the crew to make necessary changes—is what puts the technology "in a league of its own".

Captain Camilla Rothe provided several key observations regarding the system’s performance and practical integration during testing:

  • Optimal Chain Deployment: The technology helps determines the precise amount of chain necessary for safe anchoring, which is critical in busy anchorages where excessive chain length can lead to a large swinging radius and risk of collisions.
  • Seamless Hardware Integration: Despite initial concerns about size, the AnchorGuardian module fit perfectly through the hawse pipe and integrated easily with the existing anchor setup.
  • Space-Saving Design: Because the module incorporates its own swivel, it replaces the need for standard swivels and extra chain, meaning it does not take up additional space on the vessel.
  • Enhanced Situational Awareness: During the test phase, the accumulation of different data points provided a comprehensive understanding of sub-surface anchoring dynamics that was previously unavailable.
  • Efficiency and Speed: The system provides immediate feedback on whether an anchor is holding, allowing for quicker maneuvers without sacrificing safety or the traditional "feel" of the crew on the bow.
  • Environmental Protection: By delivering more accurate information about the seabed (e.g., presence of seaweed), the system allows captains to anchor carefully and protect the environment even when under time pressure from owners or guests.

Captain Luke Windle (2021)

Captain Luke Windle emphasized the importance of early warning systems and environmental stewardship during the trials:

  • Early Warning Advantage: The system provides a warning before the anchor drags rather than afterwards.
  • Preventing "Anchor Slippage": It helps identify minor slippage or "plowing" that might not be caught by traditional methods but still damages the seabed.
  • Environmental Protection: By alerting the crew before the anchor moves, it prevents the anchor from being dragged through the seabed and destroying the underwater environment.
  • Safety and Peace of Mind: Having a reliable early warning system is crucial during the night, as by the time a problem is noticed with traditional methods, the vessel may already be in a dangerous situation.
  • Complementary Tool: The technology serves as an "additional tool in the arsenal" that works alongside traditional anchoring duties to increase the overall safety factor.
