Every innovation begins with a problem. For our founder, Thomas Frizlen, that problem was one familiar to sailors around the world: uncertainty at anchor.
After years of sailing and working across maritime, engineering, and commercial roles, Thomas experienced first-hand the limitations of traditional anchor monitoring systems. Existing solutions typically provide an alarm only after significant movement has already occurred, leaving crews to react rather than anticipate.
Rather than starting with a technology and searching for a market, Thomas began with a question: could anchoring become more predictable through better information?
That question led to years of development and extensive conversations with captains, yacht managers, shipyards, and operators. Early concepts were taken directly to the industry, including visits to boat shows and shipyards where feedback helped shape the direction of the solution.
A defining moment came during the Monaco Yacht Show, where discussions with experienced superyacht captains confirmed that the challenges Thomas had experienced personally were shared across the industry. Those conversations provided the confidence to continue developing what would eventually become AnchorGuardian.
As the system matured, the first paying customers played a critical role in validating the concept. Their operational experience demonstrated that improved visibility into anchor behaviour could provide meaningful support for anchoring decisions and increase confidence while at anchor.
Over time, another benefit became increasingly clear. By helping crews better understand anchor behaviour and identify developing situations earlier, improved anchor monitoring can also contribute to reducing unnecessary seabed disturbance. What began as a safety-focused innovation revealed important environmental benefits as well.
Today, AnchorGuardian continues to evolve from its foundation of practical seamanship, engineering expertise, and direct industry feedback. While the technology itself has advanced significantly, the original mission remains unchanged: to provide captains and crews with greater visibility into anchor behaviour and support safer anchoring for sailor, ship and sea.
Reflecting on the journey, Thomas credits much of AnchorGuardian’s progress to listening closely to those who face anchoring challenges every day along with an amazing team of experts who joined forces with him early in that journey.
