Mediterranean Anchoring Regulations Report Released on World Oceans Day

Anchoring remains one of the most common operational activities undertaken by yachts throughout the Mediterranean.

Yet despite its importance, captains and crews are often required to navigate a complex landscape of national regulations, marine protected areas, local restrictions, seasonal requirements and planning resources that can vary significantly from one destination to the next.

Over recent years, Mediterranean countries have invested heavily in seabed mapping, habitat protection, marine protected areas and environmental monitoring programmes. At the same time, regulations governing anchoring have continued to evolve, particularly in areas containing sensitive habitats such as Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows.

For captains planning voyages across multiple jurisdictions, understanding these requirements can be challenging.

To help address this, Swiss Ocean Tech has released the Mediterranean Anchoring Regulations Report 2026.

The Report brings together publicly available information from official authorities, protected-area managers, harbour authorities, environmental organisations and other recognised sources into a single planning reference document.

It is not intended to replace official guidance, local requirements or professional judgement. Instead, its purpose is to provide a practical starting point that helps crews identify what to check before arrival and where to find the most relevant information.
